The Nursing Department Of The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Held Its 17th Annual Scientific Conference With The Theme "The Economic Power Of Care: Nurses' Role In Achieving Global Health Goals (Sustainable Development Goals)”. The Conference Held From The 3rd To The 5th Of December 2024.
In Her Welcome Address, Mrs. Adebola Aina, The Director Of Nursing Services At LASUTH, Emphasized That Compassion Lies At The Heart Of Every Nurse's Practice, Enabling Them To Connect With Patients On A Human Level, Empathize With Their Suffering, And Deliver Healing Care That Nourishes Both The Body And Soul. She Described Compassion Not As Mere Emotion, But As A Powerful Force That Creates Enduring Impact.
The Event Was Officially Inaugurated By The Chief Medical Director Of LASUTH And Chief Host Of The Conference. Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo. He Expressed His Delight That The Conference Has Taken A Life Of Its Own Since Inception Many Years Ago.
He Highlighted The Significance Of The Event's Theme, Stressing The Importance Of Examining The "Economic Power Of Care And The Nurses' Role In Achieving Global Health Goals" By Reviewing LASUTH's Healthcare Policies And The Critical Reliance On The Nursing Work Force.
Addressing The Challenges Faced During The 'Japa Syndrome', Where Nurses Were Overburdened With Excessive Workload, The Hospital Management Conducted A Study On 'burnout Syndrome' Among Healthcare Workers. The Study Revealed That Nurses Followed By Doctors Mostly Experienced The Syndrome In LASUTH. He Explained That To Alleviate The Pressure On Nurses, The Management Committee Introduced A New Cadre Of Staff Called Ward Assistants To Assist Nurses With Certain Tasks.
Additionally, A Policy Was Initiated Requiring Relatives Of Unconscious Or Non-ambulatory Patients In LASUTH To Mandatorily Engage A Caregiver, Again To Reduce The Burden On Nurses.
Highlighting The Hospital's Progress, Prof. Fabamwo Mentioned Ongoing Projects Such As The Pediatric Oncology Building Donated By The Redeemed Christian Church Of God, The New Four Storey Eye Institute Annexe, The Construction Of Six Executive Suites For Dignitaries, And The Already Completed Caregiver Quarters For Patients' Relatives Starting Full Operations In January 2025. He Proudly Stated That LASUTH Is The Preferred Tertiary Care Destination In Nigeria.
Dr. Afolabi Tajudeen Aboudun, The Chairman Of The Occasion And Special Adviser To The Governor On Political, Legislative, And Civic Engagement, Commended The Nurses For Their Dedication To Patients Well-being. He Generously Donated Some Funds To The Alaanu Funds And Assured The Directorate Of Nursing Services Of His Consistent Support.
In Her Keynote Address, Mrs. Adebukola Cole, The Director Of Nursing Services At The Health Service Commission Of Lagos State, Emphasized The Vital Role Of Nurses In Healthcare Outcomes And Economic Sustainability. She Encouraged Nurses To Empower Themselves To Lead And Innovate For A Prosperous And Sustainable Future In Healthcare.
The Atmosphere Was Filled With Excitement As The Directorate Of Nursing Services Had Plenary Sessions Where More Educative Lectures Were Delivered As Well As Pharmaceutical Exhibitions, Indoor Games And Lots More.
