The Physiotherapy Department Of The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Joined The Global Community To Celebrate The Annual World Physiotherapy Day, On Monday, September 9, 2024. The Event, Themed "Low Back Pain," Commenced With A Courtesy Visit To The Hospital Management. While Receiving The Physiotherapy Team, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, The Chief Medical Director Congratulated The Department On The Occasion Of World Physiotherapy Day. He Emphasized The Significance Of The Profession, Describing Physiotherapy As An Ancient Branch Of Medicine, Deeply Rooted In Patient Care Using Physical Therapy. The CMD Humorously Noted That Even Traditional Practitioners Have Engaged In Forms Of Physical Therapy For Decades, Such As Rehabilitating Fractures And Providing Abdominal Massage For Fibroid Treatment . Prof. Adebowale O. Adekoya, The Director Of Clinical Services And Training, Encouraged The Department To Continue Its Efforts To Improve And Integrate More Seamlessly With Other Clinical Departments, Reminding Them That The Future Of Physiotherapy Is Bright. A Key Highlight Of The Event Was A Live Hybrid Program, Where Dr. Mutiu Afariogun, A Consultant Orthopedic Surgeon At LASUTH, Delivered A Lecture On "Low Back Pain." He Explained That Low Back Pain Is Often Associated With Depression, Poor Lifestyle Habits, And Difficulties In Participating In Work And Social Activities. Dr. Afariogun Identified Pregnancy, Infections, And Fractures, Particularly In Women As Common Causes Of Low Back Pain. He Further Explained The Diagnostic Process, Which Includes Taking A Patient's History And Thoroughly Examining The Waist Area From Various Angles. Mr. Olumide Komolafe, Assistant Director Of Physiotherapy At LASUTH, Also Provided An Insight Into The Condition. He Highlighted That Low Back Pain Can Be Classified As Mechanical Or Non-mechanical And Listed Several Risk Factors, Including Sitting For Extended Periods, Poor Posture, Inappropriate Workstations, Improper Lifting Techniques, Low Morale, And Smoking. In Terms Of Prevention, Mr. Komolafe Advised Maintaining Proper Posture While Sitting, Lifting, And Sleeping. He Also Recommended Evaluating Workstations, Avoiding Heavy Bags, And Making Lifestyle Adjustments To Reduce The Risk Of Low Back Pain. The Event Was A Successful Recognition Of The Importance Of Physiotherapy In Patient Care And Highlighted The Crucial Role Physiotherapists Play In Improving Overall Health And Well-being of patients.
