The Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) Has Graduated A New Set Of Students From Its Caregivers Academy During The Fourth Cohort Graduation Ceremony Held On Thursday, May 21, 2026, At The MRC Auditorium, LASUTH.
A Total Of 98 Students Successfully Completed The Programme. The Ceremony Was Attended By LASUTH Executives And Members Of The Top Management Committee, Heads Of Institutions, Heads Of Departments And Units, Faculty Members, Parents, And Relatives Of The Graduands.
The Chief Medical Director, Prof. Adetokunbo O. Fabamwo, Congratulated The Graduating Students And Commended The Head Of The Academy As Well As The Resource Persons For Their Dedication And Commitment To Impacting Valuable Knowledge And Skills To The Students.
In His Address, Prof. Fabamwo Reflected On The Growing Demand For Home Care Services In Developed Countries Due To Their Ageing Populations. He Noted That Many Nigerians Who Migrated Abroad To Take Up Caregiving Jobs Often Lacked Formal Training Because Caregiving Was Wrongly Perceived As A Menial Profession That Required Little Or No Specialised Knowledge. According To Him, This Informed The Decision Of LASUTH Management To Establish The Caregivers Academy To Train And Produce Skilled Caregivers Equipped With Professional Competencies, Ethical Values, And Knowledge Of The Legal Implications Of Caregiving.
The CMD Further Explained That Management Considered The Moral Dilemma Surrounding The Training Of Young People Who Might Eventually Relocate Abroad For Employment Opportunities. However, He Stated That Every Individual Has The Right To Maximise Available Opportunities Globally. He Added That LASUTH Subsequently Partnered With An International Institution, John Academy, To Enable Graduands Obtain Internationally Recognised Certification In Home Care Services.
Prof. Fabamwo Told The Graduands That A New Horizon Had Opened For Them, Offering Opportunities For Both Local And International Engagements. He Proudly Disclosed That LASUTH Currently Employs Graduates Of The Academy Who Are Willing To Provide Care Services Within The Hospital. He Encouraged The Graduands To Utilise The Knowledge And Skills Acquired To Improve Lives And Provide Compassionate Care To Those In Need. He Also Urged Them To Uphold The Values Of Excellence For Which LASUTH Is Known.
Delivering A Goodwill Message, The Director Of Shepherd Haven, Mrs. Oluwatosin Shodunke, Congratulated The Graduands For Successfully Completing The Programme. She Described Them As Fortunate To Be Products Of The LASUTH Caregivers Academy And Reminded Them That Caregiving Is A Service To Humanity That Must Be Carried Out Diligently And With The Fear Of God. She Emphasised The Importance Of Integrity And Professionalism In Their Practice.
Mrs. Oluremi Awe, A Lecturer At The Academy Also Gave Her Remarks On Behalf Of The Members Of Faculty , She Commended The Students For Their Persistence, Dedication, And Commitment Throughout The Programme. She Noted That While Certificates May Open Doors, It Is The Character And Attitude That Sustains Opportunities. She Encouraged The Graduates To Remain Compassionate And Always Give Their Best Wherever They Find Themselves.
Delivering The Valedictory Speech, The Overall Best Graduating Student And Best Student In OSCE (Practical), Ms. Onyemenem Serah, Expressed Profound Gratitude To God For The Successful Completion Of The Programme. She Appreciated The Management Of LASUTH For Establishing The Academy And Thanked The Head Of School And Faculty Members For Their Mentorship, Discipline, Dedication, And Commitment To Excellence.
According To Her, The Training Had Taught The Graduates That Caregiving Goes Beyond Physical Assistance And Encompasses Compassion, Empathy, Dignity, And The Promotion Of Holistic Wellbeing For Those Entrusted To Their Care. She Added That The Impact Of The Faculty Members On Their Lives Would Remain Invaluable.
